Eligibility
To run for local office (Mayor, Councillor or School Trustee), you must:
- be 18 years of age or older on General Voting Day (October 15, 2022);
- be a Canadian citizen;
- be a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately prior to being nominated; and
- not be disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting are being elected to office.
Nomination Period [August 30th – September 9th]
Nomination papers will be accepted from 9:00 a.m. on August 30 until precisely 4:00 p.m. on September 9th. Nomination packages for the Municipal Candidates are available for pick up at the Municipal Office (1-385 Birch Ave) and nomination packages for School Trustees are available online. Details on how and when to submit your paperwork will be included in the covering letter within each package.
The Chief Election Officer will post a public declaration of all municipal and school trustee candidates shortly after the close of Nomination Period on September 9th.
*NOTE: Scheduling an appointment with the Chief Election Officer to submit your nomination package is the best way to ensure adequate time is reserved to go through the paperwork and ensure everything is in order. Mandatory forms must be fully completed and submitted before the deadline of 4:00 p.m. on September 9th, 2022, or the person nominated is automatically withdrawn from being a candidate in the election.
*NOTE: All candidates in local elections must abide by the campaign financing and election advertising rules under the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act (LECFA), which include campaign period expense limits, contribution limits, election advertising rules and disclosure rules.
