Regional Municipality 2026

July 8th, 2026 – For Immediate Release

The District of 100 Mile House Council, both past and present, has long advocated for a review of the current governance structure of the South Cariboo and the potential benefits of exploring the creation of a regional municipality.

Mayor Pinkney and Council have discussed the concept of a regional municipality with the Province of British Columbia and remain committed to working collaboratively with the Cariboo Regional District and neighbouring First Nations to deliver responsible, affordable and effective services to residents.

Under a regional municipality model, governance could consist of one Mayor and five Councillors representing the communities of 100 Mile House and Electoral Areas G, H & L. This model would provide South Cariboo residents with the opportunity to directly elect their Mayor and Councillors, ensuring local representation across the region. By exploring opportunities to improve governance, increase efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure local tax dollars support local jobs and services, Council is demonstrating its commitment to responsible and accountable local government.

“When our South Cariboo Communities can be viewed as a larger Municipality we have a larger collective base and increased ability to attract investment and therefore the ability for diversifying and creating larger economics.” Said Mayor Pinkney.

While the process of restructuring local government is complex and can take considerable time, the District of 100 Mile House Council remains committed to advocating for governance improvements that enhance the delivery of services to South Cariboo residents.
